In recent times I’ve been trying to learn more about photography and what it means to me. Am I just snap happy and want to photograph any and everything I see? Do I want my photos to tell a story? Do I consider my photography art? Do I concentrate on how I shoot as opposed to what I shoot? Do I want people to see what I see or do I want them to create their own interpretation of what they see?
The answer is yes to all those questions. Someone asked me the other day what my specialism was and I replied nothing and everything. Was that a bit of a cop out? Does that mean that I’m a Jack of all trades but master of none? Why should I specialise? At this stage of my journey I am very much a beginner, experimenting with different techniques. I really love black and white photography and am always drawn to it. I also like abstract, landscape, macro, street and portraiture…not necessarily in that order.
I enjoy photography because it speaks to me. Some photos have me laughing out loud (sometimes the captions help š ), some have me in tears, some in awe, others totally immerse me and cause me to go off on a little trip. Some I like because…I can’t really say why, I just do, and others I look at and think “What the ????” But then, the same applies to my feelings about art and music.
My question is what does photography mean to you and why do you choose it as a hobby or profession?
The above photo is not a favourite, but the experiment was to look at how the photo was composed and how the viewer would perceive it based on the title. What do you think?

Nice, thoughtful post. I make photographs as a hobby because it prompts me to find beauty in my world rather than being mired in the negativity that permeates modern society.

That is really interesting Fred. I’m glad you use it to find beauty that is still all around. I wonder why so many of us are blind to it. Nice positive mentality. Thanks for sharing. One love š

I would label your style as contemplative. This photo has prompted me to wonder how many people from different walks of life have sat on that weathered wooden bench lost in contemplation.

I find that my photos sometimes reflect my mood even though I might not be aware of it. I like your interpretation of it nenufar. Thank you. One love š

Keep it up! Go on photographing everything that takes your fancy. Later you may become more “choosy”. Meanwhile – enjoy! Des.

Thanks John. I enjoy reading your poetry. “As to what bokeh is in life, well, I’ll let you ponder that question.” I liked that. Very interesting. Thanks for stopping by. One love š

Nope. I want to run through all those fallen leaves and hear them rustling. Maybe I’d put my stuff down on the bench to wait for me to resume my adult personna while I gleefully kick leaves all over.

Lovely post, Damian! Your photo makes me think that those benches are lonely and are waiting for some bottoms to sit on them because they are eager to hear those introspection talks or those gossips that make the day go by more quickly… š
